I wanted to keep the cells simple because there is going to be a lot of them. To make them jiggle I am thinking of adding deformers to let the cells sway and bounce. but ill sort the jiggle out when I have finished modelling all the cells.
I'm sure you're on top of this, but you want to avoid lighting that casts all that shadow; you want directionless lighting (soft box-style) to guard against all the grey tones the shadows are creating - think soft, directionless light.
